Launches Another New Service: Facebook Gifts

Facebook has now become a good source for yet another thing: gifts. Yes, Facebook Gifts is finally rolling out, as we’ve been expecting ever since its recent acquisition of gift-giving service Karma. Facebook Gifts is all about giving gifts to your loved ones, friends, or even colleagues and acquaintances, without ever having to leave Facebook’s interface. And unlike previous attempts, this time we’re talking real gifts.

As is the case for most Facebook features, Facebook Gifts is rolling out slowly, but some of you may already see the option available on your friends’ Timeline or birthday reminders. When clicking on this gift option, you’ll be able to choose from a wide catalogue of actual merchandise, and send your chosen gift to your friend. Gifts can be private or public, so you can either brag about your new purchase to everyone or keep it between you and the receiver.

Once you send the gift, your friend will receive a notification about it immediately. They can then read the cute and touching card you’ve probably included, and preview the gift before accepting it. As with similar services such as Wantful and Wrapp, the receiver can change the color, size, or type or gift, and update a mailing address. You can choose to pay only once the gift is accepted, just to be on the safe side.

For Facebook, this is a huge step into becoming something quite different than we know today. For us, this is yet another thing we can do without having to leave Facebook. Meanwhile, for the social media giant it’s a whole new way to make money. Think about it: if Facebook Gifts picks up, Facebook can target ads just for gifts ideas. You’ll be able to view the ad, click it, and buy the product, without ever leaving Facebook.

Will you use Facebook Gifts? What do you think about this new service?
