Apple Patent A Reminder That It’s Working On Google Glass-Style Wearable Tech, Too

puppy-glasses

An Apple patent published yesterday by the USPTO and unearthed by Patently Apple is a reminder that Apple was actually working on wearable tech in the form of content-delivery glasses, at least on paper, long before Google debuted Google Glass. Apple originally filed a patent for its own Glass Project back in 2006, and this latest patent sketches out the details for a device that could someday go head-to-head with similar offerings from both Google and Microsoft.

In the new patent, Apple describes a “portable presentation device” which could be any device that a user wears that also provides them with access to visual or audio media content. It’s a fairly broad description, and I think that’s the intent: Apple has always had a habit of patenting ideas first, and worrying about bringing them to market later. That’s why the company is in such a strong position with regards to smartphone patents, despite actually being a relatively late entrant to the market vs. other cell phone makers.

The patent goes on to note that a portable presentation device could take the form of “a set of goggles that fit over the user’s eyes with display and perhaps sound producing capability, a faceplate that covers the front of the user’s face with display and perhaps sound producing capability, or any other headwear that has display and perhaps sound producing capability.” They could also contain sensors to detect a user’s presence, and in one version of the system described, the device is able to tell from how it’s being worn whether the user wants it to be active or not – so that lifting glasses with the tech built-in, for instance, would pause media playback.

So far, it sounds like Apple is essentially describing what could be an iOS-powered version of the virtual big screen home video goggles already available on the market, but the patent also describes ways in which they could activate communicate features, like making a phone call or connecting to a video conference. It also describes potential integration of live media services, streamed from Internet sources, as well as cable or satellite, yet another indication Apple is actively looking into the future of television.

Apple’s vision is still more focused on wearable media delivery, versus the AR-type features that Google is making the central feature of its Project Glass device, which is also where Microsoft seems to be headed according to its own recent patent filing. But all of these massive tech companies are clearly trying to plant their flags for the next stage of mobile tech, which begins to look increasingly like it’ll take the form of something we wear, not something we carry.

Apple Introduces Fusion Drive For The New iMac And Mac Mini

Though the announcement of the iPad mini was not a surprise at Apple’s product event on Tuesday, Apple did introduce a new memory drive few people in the audience had heard of called Fusion Drive, for the newly released iMac and Mac mini.

Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, unveiled Fusion Drive during his presentation of the new Mac products and upgrades. Fusion Drive is an optional feature that merges a 128GB flash drive (SSD) with a 1TB or 3TB hard drive — both into a single volume. It can be purchased as part of the new Macs, and in lieu of the traditional HDD or the latest Flash drives.

Schiller said the hybrid Fusion Drive will mean faster read and write performance for disk-intensive tasks and applications, such as increased speed for importing photos into Aperture and iPhoto, faster video rendering in iMovie, a 1.7x boot system rate for launching apps, and much more. Fusion Drive kicks in automatically with no prior need for setup or drive management.

Samsung Responds To iPhone 5 Frenzy With A Feisty Galaxy S III Commercial

Here we go again. Samsung (and its agency) has historically had no problem poking fun at overly-obsessed, iPhone-idolizing Apple fanatics, and just like clockwork, the Korean electronics giant has released a new commercial pointing out a handful of the iPhone 5’s omissions and foibles.

In case you don’t have a minute and a half to burn, here’s the whole thing in a nutshell: the commercial pokes at Apple’s (perhaps overly earnest) marketing language, the headphone jack’s new location, the new Lightning dock connector (twice!), the lack of NFC, and the general un-coolness of lusting after a smartphone your parents will probably want to own at some point too.

The message is, clearly, that the iPhone 5 just doesn’t match up to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III. The accuracy of that point of view is an issue I’ll leave for you to debate, but it’s a feisty little ad that I think makes a few decent (if completely ham-fisted) points about the perceived feature gap between the two phones. Either way, it’s hard to resist the temptation (for an ad nerd like me, anyway) to go digging for the commercial’s potential implications. Is going to put a dent in the iPhone 5′s sales? Hell no. As usual, people lined up nearly as soon as the damned thing was trotted out in San Francisco, and plenty of early reviews point out that the iPhone 5 seems like much more than just the sum of its changelog.

Interestingly enough, some people are already reading this commercial as an attempt to reach out to dyed-in-the-wool Apple customers (to see the errors of their ways, I guess). That seems like a hell of a stretch — after all, the portrayal of Apple line-goers as doe-eyed iPhone apologists probably won’t elicit much in the warm-and-fuzzy feelings department. It seems more like a way to keep the Galaxy S III name at the top of people’s minds when it comes time to buy a new phone, especially considering that Samsung’s sizable smartphone will be five or six months old — nearly ancient in mobile terms — once the holiday buying frenzy kicks off.

By the way, if you could use a laugh, be sure to check out the video’s comments on YouTube — you’ll surely see platform fanboyism at its finest.

Users Report Annoying (Apparently Fixed) WiFi Bug In iOS 6

ios 6 bug

It looks like there’s been another bug in today’s launch of iOS 6. We’ve been getting multiple tips stating iOS 6 is causing a bug in users’ WiFi several hours after it’s installed. There are also tweets and a long discussion thread on the Apple website to that effect.

Heck, it’s already getting to the point where people are making jokes.

Here’s what the basic pattern seems to be: The WiFi works all right at first, but then you’re eventually booted off. If you try to get on again, it looks like you’ve connected, but then you’re redirected to a login/404 page on the Apple website. Someone named “tylerc” on Twitter offers this explanation: “Turns out iOS checks http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html … to make sure WiFi doesn’t require login, but that page was 404′ing, so, disaster. Crazy!”

When I checked this out myself, I noticed that I had been disconnected from the TechCrunch office WiFi, but once I got on again, I didn’t have any problems. TechCrunch’s Drew Olanoff had a similar experience. It also looks like the Apple page in question is up again, so the issue may be resolved. I’ve also emailed Apple in the off chance that they respond.

iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 4S: Your Guide To Buy The Right Smartphone

Now that the iPhone 5 has officially arrived we have to ask to ask: Has Apple done what it takes to win your hearts (and wallets) over other smartphone suitors like Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and Nokia’s Lumia 920?

A lot’s at stake with Apple’s latest handset: For one thing, iPhone in August lost the No. 1 spot in the U.S. smartphone market to the Galaxy S3, though some of the decreased consumer interest was due to anticipation over the new iPhone’s release in September.

Take a look at our spec comparison (below), in which we pit the official features of the iPhone 5 against to two of its cutting-edge competitors, as well as the now-obsolete iPhone 4S.

Do you think the iPhone 5 stacks up? If you’re in the market for a new phone, which would you consider buying?

*Battery times for talk time based on manufacturer claims as found at PhoneArena. Web browsing time for Apple and Nokia based on manufacturer claim; web browsing time for Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S based on tests from GSM Arena.

UPDATE: A Samsung representative emailed that the company thinks its phone’s NFC capabilities — including S Beam and Buddy Share — are the Galaxy S III’s killer features. Also note that the Galaxy S III should be upgradeable to Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” by the end of the year.

Apple Announcement Roundup: iPhone 5, New iPod Touch, iPod Nano, EarPods

apple-logo-dark

Apple’s conference was full of small and big announcements and very dense. Between the announcements of the iPhone 5 and the updated iPod line-up, it is hard to keep track of all the details. It is now time to look back and read our coverage of what Apple showed to the press today.

The iPhone 5

Of course, the biggest announcement was the unveiling of the iPhone 5. The rumors were true — the device sports a 4-inch display, comes with a new dock connector called Lightning (adapters are available), LTE and 802.11n dual-channel 5GHz Wi-Fi and a nano-SIM slot.

It will be available on September 21 for $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB or $399 for 64GB — pre-orders open on Friday. Previous iPhone models will be sold at $99 or even given away with a two-year contract. Read the hands-on and watch Apple’s video.

Apple’s New Lightning Connector: What It Does And Doesn’t Change

Lightning-connector

Apple changed its long-standing 30-pin dock connector out for an 8-pin new standard called Lightning. But what does that actually mean for users? Well the advantages are mostly passed on through hardware design — not necessarily around performance.

Here’s the skinny: Apple made claims on-stage about improved speed and reliability, thanks to an “eight-signal, all-digital” hardware design. The speed could be better, but this is still based on USB 2.0 specs, not 3.0 or Thunderbolt. That means gains will be modest, not magical. And given that Apple recently made sure that its latest notebooks all have USB 3.0, that seems strange.

But it isn’t that bizarre, really. Apple would have had to do significant redesigns on the inside of the iPhone itself to make that change, and that would have cost more money and affected margins. Engadget senior columnist and long-time mobile industry analyst Ross Rubin told me via email that, while USB 3.0 seems like a logical way to go, that likely won’t happen for a while yet, but is probably an easy switch in terms of the tech in the cabling itself.

Apple Announces iOS 6 Release For September 19th

As part of the recent iPhone 5 media event, Apple demonstrated and reviewed their next operating system update, iOS 6, for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The iOS 6 update will be available for download on September 19, followed by the sale of the new iPhone on September 21st. The 5th generation iPod touch will go on sale in October.

The vice president of iOS software, Scott Forstall, gave a basic overview of the new release which will include changes and enhancements to all the built-apps for iOS devices, including Siri, Maps, Music, FaceTime, Messages, Safari, AirPlay, and Game Center. The iOS 6 update will be free and will run on all iOS devices including and since the iPhone 3GS. Here are a few highlights.

Adfonic: Android Tops iOS As Most Popular Platform On Global Ad Network; iPhone, iPad Still Top Devices

android-v-iphone

Android is now most-used smartphone platform worldwide, and that swing is being reflected in other areas like mobile advertising. Today some numbers out from Adfonic indicate that in Q2, Android accounted for the majority of mobile ad impressions on its network worldwide, with 46 percent compared to iOS’s 34 percent of impressions. This is the first time Adfonic says it has recorded Android being more popular than iOS. In that, it joins other big ad networks like Millennial Media and InMobi, which both noted Google’s OS overtaking Apple’s earlier this year.

Adfonic’s Global AdMetrics Report is based on 4,000 rich-media campaigns run monthly for brands like Samsung, Warner Bros, eBay, McDonald’s, Groupon and Google, reaching 200 million mobile unique users monthly over 80 billion ad requests. The company notes that today’s Android popularity is a near-mirror switch from the quarter before, when iOS took 45 percent of traffic to Android’s 38 percent. The only region where Android has yet to dominate over iOS, Adfonic says, is South America, and overall iOS lost marketshare in every region. The U.S., on the other hand, has seen the most drastic flip:

In Q1 in the U.S., Android and iOS were nearly level, with just four percentage points separating Android’s 46 percent to iOS’s 42 percent. This last quarter, iOS dropped down to 30 percent while Android shot up to 63 percent. Given that the U.S. is leading the charge with smartphones, this could potentially be read as a bad sign for Apple in the months to come — although the launch of a new iPhone will likely change the balance once again.

And that’s because this is not just a story of platforms but of devices — and for Apple, it’s still winning massively where that is concerned. Adfonic notes that taken as individual devices, Apple’s are still proving to be the most popular — by quite a long shot.

The iPhone accounts for 26.5 percent of all impressions among all the smartphones on Adfonics’ network. Although that is a decline of eight percent on the quarter before, the runner-up device, also an iOS handset (the iPod Touch), is only at 5.2 percent (also a decline). Samsung and Blackberry round out the top five, and both actually grew their market shares, albeit from a small base.

The same story appears in tablets, where the iPad accounted for almost 54.8 percent of all traffic. Again it’s a decline, this time of 12 percent, but still comfortably ahead of number-two — in this case the Kindle Fire from Amazon with 6.6 percent of impressions and growing.

That could also be a testament to how well the Kindle Fire might perform in the long run: the device is still only available in the U.S., and yet it’s still ranking as the second-most-popular worldwide for ad impressions (and, hence, content usage) on Adfonic’s network.

Taken together, Android and iOS accounted for 80 percent of Adfonic’s global ad inventory — a pretty stark statement, once again, of how dominant these two are together at the expense of Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Symbian and the rest. This is as much about attracting advertisers to buy ads on attractive devices as it is about consumer popularity. Paul Childs, CMO at Adfonic noted: “iOS and Android smartphones and tablets have the most compelling user interfaces, comprising touchscreens, geolocation features and attractive displays. They are fulfilling their tremendous advertising potential to show engaging ad formats, such as rich media.”

Adfonic’s extensive report (which you can read in full here) also covers a lot of detail on successful verticals, the difference in ad performance by gender and other metrics. One notable graphic that caught my eye was this one on impressions based on different verticals, which shows that music is currently having the biggest pull for advertisers, taking 39 percent of all ad spend on its network; technology ads were the second-highest at 28 percent. In terms of publisher channels, sites and apps in the entertainment and lifestyle categories are seeing increases in their ad requests, while games, social networking, and news/sport/information all saw declines.

An iPad Lover’s Take On The Nexus 7

photo 1

Trolls, feel free to skip to the bottom of this column and post your comments immediately without reading a word. Actually, who are we kidding — you didn’t make it this far.

Everyone else, brace yourselves. You may want small children to leave the room. I’m about to do something I don’t do often — something I always said I’d do if the product deserved it. Something some people seem to think I’m incapable of: praise a Google product — an Android-based Google product, no less.

Is that enough build up for you? Okay.

I like the Nexus 7. I really like it.

I was out of town during Google I/O this year and missed the opportunity to see the unveiling and get my hands on the product a few weeks back. But Google was kind enough to give me a Nexus 7 demo unit last week. I’ve given the company credit for this before. For the most part, they don’t mind criticism and genuinely seem to want to build products that all consumers (whether Apple fans or not) will like. And with the Nexus 7, I think they’ve done just that.

To be clear, the product isn’t perfect. But no product is. Yes, that includes Apple products (though the MacBook Air in the pre-retina world was pretty damn close, in my opinion). But with the Nexus 7, Google has, for the first time, created an Android product that I would buy for myself. And I wouldn’t have an issue recommending it to anyone else.

Everyone already knows the device’s two key features: the 7-inch screen and the $199 price. Both have been rumored for months. And I was highly skeptical of both. I love my iPad from the screen size on down. And I didn’t think it would be possible to build a great tablet at such a low price.

But I was wrong.

Granted, Google isn’t making any money selling the device at $199 — at least not directly. And the device isn’t quite iPad-quality. But the iPad starts at $499. This is less than half the price. And the build quality is very good.

Normally when I get a review unit of a non-Apple product, I have to force myself to use it to get a sense of how I might use it in the real world. But with the Nexus 7, I actually find myself wanting to use it. That point can’t be overstated. I actually want to use an Android device. It’s a brave new world.

For me, the key is the size. Again, I was skeptical at first, but for many situations, I’ve come to love the 7-inch frame. The iPad is brilliant when you’re sitting on a couch or camped out in a coffee shop. In my view, the 9.7-inch iPad is slowly but surely becoming a laptop replacement. I expect this to continue. But a 7-inch tablet is different. The iPad is clunky to read in bed, for example. The Nexus 7 is perfect for that.

More broadly, the 7-inch tablet further opens the door to true mobile computing. I find myself constantly using it while walking around the house (as opposed to sitting on the couch). And I don’t think twice about shoving it in my bag when I take off for the day (as I sometimes do with my iPad when I have my laptop with me). Many could say the same about the iPad, but in my view, the 7-inch tablet is more desirable in many circumstances simply because it’s — shocker — smaller. 9.7 inches versus 7 inches may not seem like a huge difference. But it is.

Whereas laptop sizes vary mainly to please screen size preference, I suspect that 7-inch tablets will fit naturally into different use cases than 10-inch tablets. In other words, I believe they’ll end up being closer to two different categories rather than two variations of the same category.

Having used a 7-inch tablet for the past week, I now see it as an absolute no-brainer that Apple has to make an iPad with this form factor as well. Of course, such rumors have been swirling for a while — and now the smoke seems too thick for there not to be a fire. It’s coming — but when it does, Apple will find itself in a position it hasn’t been in for some time: being a second-mover to a good product already on the market (as opposed to being a second-mover to a bunch of mediocre-to-shitty products, as has been the case many times in the past).

Back to the Nexus 7 (sorry, this is an “Apple column” remember). For now, its true competitor is the Kindle Fire. But calling the Kindle Fire a “competitor” is probably being too kind to Amazon. All I know is that Amazon better hope their next version of the device is ready to go ASAP and that it’s significantly better than the first version. Because the Nexus 7 seems far better in pretty much every way.

Loaded with Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean”, the Nexus 7 is as fast as advertised. I do spot some lag from time to time (the swiping between main screens could still be smoother when a live wallpaper is running, but that’s a minor thing most regular users probably won’t notice), but it’s almost always within apps which don’t seem custom-tailored for the new OS yet. A good example is the Facebook app. iOS users constantly complain about this app being slow and unreliable — on Android, it’s much worse. That includes on the Nexus 7.

With the Google-built apps, Jelly Bean runs great. Overall, the OS doesn’t seem all that different from Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich”, but it’s more refined. I imagine it’s similar to what we’ll see with iOS 6 versus iOS 5. These mobile OSes are getting mature enough now where it’s more about refinement. For a long time, Android needed far more than polish. Now it’s at that stage.

Gaming had been one problematic area in the past for Android. With the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean, it’s solid. I played several games that I play on iOS devices to compare — games like Canabalt, Osmos, Sky Safari, Angry Birds, World of Goo, Flick Golf, and Fruit Ninja. All now seem to run just as well as they do on iOS devices.

While the Nexus 7 has access to apps like Flipboard (and it runs great on the device, though without access to New York Times content, oddly), other apps like Instagram and Tumblr can’t be installed because they say the device isn’t supported. I’m told this is due to code in those apps which puts a “ceiling” on the Android version number on which they can be installed, and this should be fixed soon.

This brings up another important issue: because this is a Nexus device that Google built in conjunction with Asus, it should be fairly future-proof for future versions of Android and apps that require the more advanced APIs they provide. While previous Nexus devices still had issues getting timely updates, the Nexus 7 is WiFi-only, meaning the carriers have absolutely no say when it comes to updates here. In other words, goodbye bottlenecks.

But this is a double-edged sword. One of my favorite aspects of the new iPad is the 4G connectivity both because it’s really, really fast and because it works basically everywhere. With the Nexus 7, you have to rely on a WiFi connection. Again, while that’s great news for future updates, it’s bad news for true road warriors. (It also makes Google Now, the tentpole new feature of Jelly Bean, less useful because it can’t constantly send you new information based on your location.) Still, given Google’s difficulties in dealing with the carriers in the past, I think this was the right call.

As you might imagine, the lack of cellular radio also seems to help the battery life of the device quite a bit. It’s fantastic.

Another nit I have with the 7 involves the software system buttons. A number of times while playing a game in horizontal mode, I would inadvertently activate the buttons and hit one of them. The issue is that because the screen is so small, it’s a bit awkward to use with two hands. Likewise, in portrait mode, there isn’t much of a bezel to grip. It’s easy enough to hold with one hand, but for an iPad user (which features a much larger bezel), this took some getting used to.

When you first boot up the Nexus 7, you’ll notice that Google has given prominent position to Google Play media items. In fact, that entire main screen is dominated by a rather ridiculously large “My Library” widget (which I quickly replaced with my favorite apps instead). This is a weird choice because one area of weakness for the device is the media catalog. The Google Play store still doesn’t have access to any Warner music, for example. And the film, television, magazine, and book libraries are smaller than those that Apple and Amazon offer. I suppose this was a decision made to go right after the Kindle Fire (a “media tablet”), but again, Amazon still wins that battle. It’s not a huge deal, just an odd choice, in my opinion.

Now I’m back to focusing on the negative — old habits die hard, sorry. Again, the fact remains that the Nexus 7 is a great device. Not a great device graded on some weird curve where we pretend that Apple products don’t exist — but a great device, period. The $199 price point is just icing on the cake.

If you’re an iOS person like myself, you obviously have to think about Apple moving into this space as well. And I think the Nexus 7 shows a few places where Apple can improve the 7-inch tablet space — namely in making a device just a bit larger so it’s easier to hold with two hands, and using their existing pay-as-you-go carrier deals to offer up 3G/4G connectivity. We’ll see.

But for now, Apple’s not in this space. And the clear winner in this space is the Nexus 7.
