Google anunció una nueva ultraportable Chromebook fabricada por Samsung, quien por ahora será el único que las fabricará, luego de que Acer abandonara en Abril pasado.

Samsung Chromebook es un portátil ultraligero, especialmente diseñado para tareas de todos los días.  Como es sabido, utiliza el sistema operativo Chrome OS, el cual incluye las aplicaciones de Google.

Su peso es de menos de 1.1 kg y ofrece más de 6,5 horas de batería.  Su precio será de u$s 249.00 y comenzará a comercializarse a partir de la próxima semana en Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido.

La filosofía de almacenarlo todo en Internet ha llegado incluso a crear sistemas operativos basados en la nube. Los ejemplos más notables Chrome OS y Joli OS, de Google y Jolicloud respectivamente; dos sistemas que pretenden sentar la base de lo que será este tipo de software en el futuro.

Tanto Chrome OS como Joli OS funcionan en base a aplicaciones web y tienen muchos puntos en común, aunque también ventajas y debilidades muy marcadas.

If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, you don’t need to call Ghostbusters. Just launch a ghost-hunting app on your smartphone. They’re designed to use sensors built into your phone -- such as the gyroscope, magnetometer and accelerometer -- to mimic the function of equipment used by professional and hobbyist paranormal investigators. Whether or not a mobile app is capable of measuring paranormal phenomena is debatable, but you want to check out your surroundings, download and install some ghost-hunting gear.

Ghost Radar: Legacy (iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Android; $0.99)

• Ghost Radar: Legacy uses the sensors on your phone to measure electromagnetic fields, vibrations and sounds around you, then employs a proprietary algorithm that takes that data and uses it to measure quantum fluctuations – temporary changes in the amount of energy around you. Readings are displayed numerically on the Vox tab of the app and as colored dots and words on the Radar screen. According to the developer, “intelligent energy” can influence the sensors on your phone and communicate with you through the readouts displayed onscreen.

Google just announced a new $249 Chromebook manufactured by Samsung, which you’ll be able to order starting next week (at least, that’s the official launch date, although some vendors may start taking preorders before then). It will feature a 11.6-inch screen capable of running 1080p video, weigh 2.5 pounds, be 0.8 inches thick, and should run for 6.5 hours on battery under typical usage.

Sundar Pichai, Google’s senior vice president for Chrome and Apps, said the goal was to create a  ”thin, light, portable computer which is great quality.” He said the team sees this as a second device people use at home, as a complement to their desktop computer or a more powerful laptop.

To demonstrate that idea, Pichai and his team went through a quick demo of how someone might use the Chromebook (which are basically laptops that use Google’s cloud-centric Chrome OS), emphasizing its integration with Google services like Gmail, YouTube, and Google Hangouts. He argued that when consumers make purchasing decisions, they think in terms of “ecosystems” (though they probably wouldn’t use that word) — if you use a lot of Microsoft services, you’ll probably buy a Windows device, whereas a Chromebook should be more appealing if you use lots of Google services and devices.

In that vein, Google is also emphasizing Google Drive as the best way to store files and make them available across devices, so the new Chromebooks will come with 100 gigabytes of free Drive storage for two years. (The device also comes with 16 gigabytes of flash memory.)

It sounds like Google is trying to reach a mainstream audience with the new devices — in fact, Pichai said the company is launching its first big Chromebook ad campaign tonight.
